Welcome to your hub for Gifted Awareness Week Aotearoa!
As we look back on the development of gifted education advocacy in Aotearoa New Zealand, Dave Freeman is recognised as a persistent and influential voice for gifted children and their families.
A central part of Dave Freeman’s contribution has been his role in creating and sustaining APEX magazine - a publication that gave space to informed discussion about giftedness at a time when such perspectives were rarely visible. APEX helped translate complex ideas into accessible language, supported families to feel less isolated, and fostered a sense of shared identity within the gifted community. In doing so, it strengthened advocacy by building understanding, confidence, and connection.
Looking back, we see how his work extended beyond publishing into a sustained advisory role. As an advisor, Dave Freeman supported educators to better understand giftedness and to navigate systems not always equipped to respond to difference. His advice was grounded in lived experience, practical knowledge, and a clear commitment to children’s wellbeing — helping others move from frustration to informed action.
His advocacy consistently emphasised that gifted education is not about advantage, but about fit: ensuring that children’s cognitive, emotional, and social needs are recognised and met. By mentoring others, contributing to dialogue, and remaining engaged over time, he helped normalise parent advocacy as a legitimate and necessary part of the gifted education landscape.
Looking forward, Dave Freeman’s legacy reminds us that progress depends on informed voices being heard - through publications, advisory roles, and courageous conversations. Looking Back to Move Forward calls us to continue sharing knowledge, supporting one another, and advocating thoughtfully so that gifted learners are no longer left to navigate misunderstanding alone.
During Gifted Awareness Week, we acknowledge Dave Freeman for his contribution to a culture of connection, communication, and advocacy that continues to shape awareness and action for gifted learners across Aotearoa New Zealand.
