Today we are honouring two more pillars in the Aotearoa New Zealand Gifted community: Sonia White and Professor Melinda Webber. Read about them below!
As we look back on gifted education advocacy, identification, and programme development in NZ then Sonia White, gifted education consultant and author, stands out.
Her presence in the gifted community reflects a practical, classroom-to-system focus - emphasising appropriate identification of gifted learners, thoughtful programme design, and opportunities for gifted young people to engage in meaningful academic and social experiences.
Looking back, our understanding of what helps gifted Māori learners flourish has shifted from narrow checklists to a richer view that places culture, identity, and belonging at the centre.
Professor Melinda Webber has been instrumental in that shift - bringing research, pedagogy, and Māori knowledge together so schools can see gifts through a Te Ao Māori lens.
