Family Size (Explorers member family) 2 participants = $70

Family Size (Explorers member family) 4+ participants =$110

    Free for a supervisor.

We need lots of adult volunteer helpers in addition to the camp's paid instructors for the day to run all the activities we want. Register with a Supervisor (Free) ticket to sign up as a volunteer as well as booking your group of participants.

We hope to run 5-7 activities. We will make arrangements so volunteer parents will have their kids supervised during training and duties.

We will be divided into groups of 10-12 (please let us know if you have a group preference with another family). Each activity will be on one hour rotation.

The camp is self-catered to keep costs manageable and allow participants to cater to their own requirements. BYO picnic-style food.

Note the full day camp cost is $52pp so Explorers is subsidising this event. Further subsidies may be available in case of need; please email if you wish to apply.

POP/COP is a popular Explorers meet up for older kids, running once or twice each term. If you haven't tried before, come and give it a go.

For a first time, we suggest joining in the 'Structured POP' that is suggested for the 9+ age group and there's room for the parents to sit in and join the discussions too.

The three groups running at this session are:
Senior POP (11+), Structured POP (9+) and Construction ie COP (9+)

Senior POP, or Philosophy over Pizza, is aimed at older students (11+) who want to do more than "hang out" on a Saturday evening. These are very free flowing sessions, parents tend to leave the group to it. The group is facilitated by a University student.

We meet together to share pizza and discuss the "BIG ISSUES" but, more importantly, we learn how to discuss any issue. We might discuss : "what do I mean when I say something is real?", "when I say, we know this is true, how can I be sure that it is true?", "does intuition have anything to do with logic?", "what does it mean if I say, this thing is beautiful?"

Structured POP group (recommended minimum age 9) - facilitated by Explorers parents/educators. This is a more structured session and parents are welcome, in fact encouraged to sit in.

COP, or Construction over Pizza is a loosely guided construction activity using one of Explorers' many construction sets. What will it be next? Suitable for age 9+

    All this and pizza too!

Explorers is happy to present Dr Rhys C Jones, the Director of the Science Scholars programme at Auckland University, the only one of its kind here in NZ (

      In his talk, Rhys will:

      1. Discuss his own journey both professionally and personally, explaining the challenges he has faced balancing stereotypes of societal norms around intellect versus being sociable
      2. Share his own observations and personal experiences of the importance people place on the use of labels and identity.
      3. Present a workshop that explores intelligence and creativity, which will include hands on activities for everyone to get involved with.
