Submission Guidelines for APEX

The New Zealand Association for Gifted Children (NZAGC), as owner of APEX, wishes to encourage open access and exchange of information, knowledge and resources. It intends APEX to support the collaborative production of copyright works that are freely available in all areas related to gifted education.

Submission of any manuscript (the Manuscript) to APEX is an acknowledgment and acceptance by the author(s) that:

  1. A Creative Commons licence will apply to any Manuscript published by APEX in the format “© [year of first publication] [Author(s)]. This is an Open Access article licensed under the Creative Commons License Attribution – Non-commercial – ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA) “;
  2. If accepted by APEX, the Manuscript may be published in any format considered appropriate by the APEX editorial Board, in consultation with the NZAGC National
  3. Manuscripts submitted to APEX must contain original research, theoretical studies or accounts of practice that contribute to our understanding of giftedness and of talent development. Submissions should be approximately 6000-8000 words in Word format and be made by email to the editor, Janna Wardman (
  4. Submitted Manuscripts are required to meet the following criteria:
    • Identifiers removed to allow for blind review
    • Double-spacing and Times New Roman 12 point
    • An abstract of 100-150 words
    • 3 to 5 keywords
    • Written in keeping with guidelines of the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
    • A separate title page that includes the title of the Manuscript, word count, full names, affiliations and contact details of all authors
    • Tables and figures, if any, as separate attachments
    • An accompanying brief biographical statement about the author(s).
  5. If any Manuscript incorporates copyright protected material, authors must identify that information and have written permission from the original publisher to reproduce this material (on equivalent terms to those set out in these Submission Guidelines). In addition, appropriate acknowledgement will need to be given of the permission granted in the Manuscript, and that the permission authorises publication on the basis outlined in these Submission Guidelines.
  6. All Manuscript submissions are initially screened for appropriateness, before being reviewed by at least two independent anonymous referees in a blind review process to determine whether the Manuscript will be accepted and published by APEX. The Editor(s) have the right to make a final decision regarding publication.
  7. Submission of a Manuscript to APEX:
    • represents a certification on the part of the author(s) that:
      • it is an original work, and that neither this Manuscript, nor a version of it, has been published previously, nor is being considered for publication elsewhere, and
      • that all individuals represented as author(s) actually contributed to the Manuscript and that all individuals who contributed are included; and
    • is confirmation by the author(s) that he / she agrees that any Manuscript accepted for publication by APEX will be published in APEX in the format, and in accordance with the production and distribution choices of the Editor (which will be determined after general consultation with the NZAGC National Committee).
    • the author(s) hereby grant to APEX / NZAGC during the full term of the author(s) copyright a non-exclusive licence of all rights of copyright in and to the submitted Manuscript, and all rights therein including but not limited to the right to publish, republish, transmit, distribute and otherwise use the Manuscript in electronic and print editions of APEX and in derivative works throughout the world, in all languages and in all media of expression now known or later developed, and to license or permit others to do so. Currently APEX will be published by Exeley Inc, which entity will have a licence to publish any article accepted for publication in accordance with the copyright provisions contained herein and to be identified as the publisher.
  8. The initial review is envisaged to take approximately 3 months. Author(s) may then be invited to undertake revisions. Completed Manuscripts that are accepted for publication will be published in the next issue of APEX.
  9. If a Manuscript is not accepted for publication the terms of these Submission Guidelines will cease to apply
