| A Love For Learning - Motivation and the Gifted Child |
Carol A. Strip, Ph.D with Gretchen Hirsch |
Member review 2010: 'This book was a pleasure to read. It is organised into a clear progression of chapters with a succinct summary at the conclusion of each chapter. The book focuses on the gifted student. Firstly it looked at the key characteristics of the gifted including that of high levels of motivation. It then described the major theories of motivation and the various types of motivation. Following this a large portion of the book looked at an array of factors that undermine motivation. Finally it went on to recommend in detail a “recipe” for conditions that support motivation. The text was kept interesting by plenty of anecdotal case studies the authors had encountered throughout their working careers. While it is written about American students it seems to have a lot of relevance to families in NZ.' Aims to provide vital information to help educators and parents supply the four C's needed to create and nurture enthusiasm. Four C's: Challenge, Committment, Control, Compassion. Motivation in Gifted Children often wanes and there are many demotivating factors, which can lead to academic underachievement and even depression. The principles and techniques described in this book counteract these factors, and will spark and cultivate excitement for lifelong learning. Chapters include: Physical Reasons for lack of Motivation, Emotional Reasons for Lack of Motivation, Social Reasons for Lack of Motivation, School Reasons for Lack of Motivation, The Four C's in Action, The Classroom that Works, Motivating Every Student. |

| A Mind at a Time |
Mel Levine |
"Different minds learn differently" writes Dr Mel Levine, one of the best known learning experts and pediatricians in America today. Some students are strong in certain areas and some are strong in others, but no one is equally capable in all. Yet most schools still cling to the one-size-fits-all education philosophy. As a result, many children struggle because their learning patterns don't fit the way they are being taught.
In A MIND AT A TIME, Dr Levine shows parents and those who care for children how to identify these individual learning patterns, explaining how they can strengthen a child's abilities and either bypass or help overcome the child's weaknesses, producing positive results instead of repeated frustration and failure.
Consistent progress can result when we understand that not every child can do equally well in every tyoe of learning and begin to pay more attention to individual learning patterns - and individual minds - so that we can maximize children's success and gratification in life. |
