I realise there is a 'homeschooling Christchurch' thread but the most recent posts on there are focussing on assessment. Is there anyone on here who has a recent association with a homeschooling network in ChCh? I checked the CHE website but it appears quite out-of-date (with reference to a newsletter from 2004). Before we take this momentous step we would like an idea of what kind of regular activities/get-togethers are available, just how strong the support network is, is the support confined to one or two areas in ChCh (or fairly widespread), is there a Christian/secular focus, are there many 'gifted' homeschooled children in Christchurch, etc. I'm keen but also *very* frightened of doing this only to find it is not for us and I've made yet another poor decision in my children's education. Thank-you.
Hi Anon
What age is you child/children? We have been HSing in Chch for a while now and are members of several different groups that give us access to numerous and varied activities all over town. Feel free to contact me by email if you'd like to chat specifics or ask any "curly" questions.... I know it probably feels like you have heaps right now! (moirs@ihug.co.nz)
There is heaps of help and people out there - it's just knowing where to tap into them!
Great that Anne's offering to answer a few queries for you, Anon.
I just want to comment that just because a website doesn't provide up to date or in depth info, please don't feel that you won't find what you need within the home ed community. It's just a reflection of the busyness of homeschooling life - we're all volunteers. You'll get there ... take lots of deep breaths and enjoy the journey. You'll be amazed at what you discover about others and yourself.
I sometimes think that tenacity in digging up info about homeschooling and finding your way to real families is a baptism of fire to galvanize you, despite its frustrations! If it was so easy to start up, everyone would be doing it and there'd be a higher drop-out rate, I reckon! Lol
