Another parent teacher interview - and I just dread them! My 2E son will never be what they want him to be ......on paper and in timed tests. He is doing too well to be noticed but not good enough to be acknowledged. He's too anxious about falling behind to go to ODS again but is resorting to old behaviors due to a lack of stimulation. He doesn't 'qualify' for the extension class and besides, his teacher says he lacks motivation. She doesn't realise my boy is up at 6:30 every morning so he can get to school and struggle with his dyslexia AND still get above average grades. Sometimes it's soooo frustrating:(
I think they have 30 places in the enrichment class.you have to score in the top 30 for the tests the school gives out. Which is a struggle when you're dyslexic and unfortunately the teacher didnt give him the extra time which he was entitled to! Placement is also based on recommendation by their primary school teacher. So an IQ assessment does not feature in the selection process at all.....to the detriment of 2E kids
I have a 2e child. Timed tests are an issue for us also. I agree with Jo - that Sucks! And it's discriminatory. He shouldn't be excluded because of a learning disability. It is so frustrating when their gifts are not celebrated at school, and it's tough on a 2e child's already fragile self esteem. We are taking extension classes into our own hands and we have just signed up for the local Fonterra Science Road show in our area. We'll take him out of school with an ODS friend. That kind of hands on environment is amazing for kids with learning disabilities. Keep up the good work. A really cool accepting teacher has made all the difference for us this year. And ODS has been a life saver.
