 Writing tutor

Hi,
I have a 10 yr boy who has always had problems with spelling and writing, none of the extra classes through his local school have seen any improvement. Does anyone know of a writing tutor that could help. We are in Beachlands.

Thanks
Trish

Hi Trish, I don't know of any particular writing tutors in the East Auckland area. However I do know that writing is an issue for many gt children - boys especially. My daughter C (11 1/2) has major issues with spelling and would be considered very behind if she was in school (homeschooled). However she is getting there - visual children (like your son) often find spelling difficult and it is just a case of practise over time makes perfect. My Hubby is a very clever engineer but can't spell or write!

I have a friend who's daughter (also very VS) uses a writer in exams in her high school. If you take your son to an ed psych closer to an age where exams are important, they can write a letter explaining that a writer is recommended.

One word about extra classes - usually more of the same thing won't make a difference!! If it's not being learnt the way it's being taught in school, you need to find a different way.

Similar problems with my 11 year old son. Anyone know a good writing tutor in Lower Hutt? School is not helping - no progress for over 2 years now... turned off writing completely.

You could try using visual spelling techniques - look up Linda Silverman's book about Upside Down Brilliance for how to do this. For some kids phonetic approaches just don't spin their wheels and for others having two stings to their bow makes it all click better anyway.

There is a series published by an NZ author [ex Auckland Uni lecturer] about developing written work [essays etc]. He started with Uni students, then developed a High School edition and is currently working on a primary school version - so watch the book shop shelves!

You can look at the "Write That Essay; High School Edition, box set [book and DVD] at Whitcoulls in the meantime.
