Is anyone aware of any chess clubs for children ih ChCh? I checked the website of the Canty Chess Club and it says that they have junior nights on Fridays from 7 until 10pm. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other groups with perhaps a more 'reasonable' hour for a 6yr-old?
I've seen an ad for coaching, and, although lessons would be great, what we're looking for is a chance to play regularly with other children. Any help would be appreciated.
Jacinta Buist runs an excellent chess club for children on a Saturday at St Peter's Parish Hall,11 Fisher Ave.
Lessons run from 1-2pm and from 2-3pm games are played.Your child may attend either one session or both.
Proper chess ettiquette is taught and the children sit theory papers and gain badges and grades.
Cost is $50-00/$25-00 per term.
Children range in age from 5-14years.

Hi
I have a recently turned 6 year old who also enjoys chess and draughts. Could you forward any information you find out about clubs for this age group to me. Thank you.
Janine, thanks **so** much for that. I am going to follow that up with Jacinta and get more information. I like the fact that it is for children and of course it's on at a reasonable hour. Thanks!
Carla, the canterbury chess club has a website but their junior nights are Friday 7 to 10pm I think. For us that's too late for our 6yo. I haven't contacted them myself yet (as that time doesn't suit us) but I'm also unsure what they mean by 'juniors'. There is also a north canterbury chess club (I found that on the CCC database cinch); they also have a website. I think they meet Tuesday evening but again I'm not sure how much is for 'children'. Of course, some children may beat some adults but...I'd prefer my child to play with other children. Have you checked at school? Our child's school (Ilam) has chess on a Monday lunchtime. My daughter only recently found out about it and she hasn't attended yet so I don't know any more about it than that. Good luck.

Hi
Wonder if you know of any chess lessons/clubs for children. My Grandson is 9 years old and would like to learn chess properly. Also are there any private tutors?
Regards
Ann
Children are welcome to attend the junior session of the Canterbury Chess Club. We open Wednesday evenings, 6:15pm - 7:15pm for juniors, 7:30pm for adults and stronger juniors. Our address is Unit 9/27 Tyne Street, Addington, Christchurch (Tyne St is by the Placemakers on Mandeville St). Our website is www.chess.org.nz.
Cost is $2/night casually or $70/yr subscription. Children vary in age, but typically the stronger juniors play in the senior competitions later in the evening, so the earlier attendance is a more casual and younger audience.
I am happy to provide tuition on a Wednesday night to those juniors who are interested, but it would be fair to say that most children prefer casual play to coaching. I'm not aware of any private tutors currently active in Chch.
Hope that helps!
