Just wondering if anyone could recommend either a good cd-rom or website where my kids could learn to play chess. Daughter 9yrs and son 6yrs. I have never played chess but their dad plays really well but just doesn't have the patience to teach them right from scratch.

My 6 year old started on LEGO chess and loved it. The pieces are all in character (I think the children can select what set they play with i.e. cowboys). You can also have some sort of tuition while you're playing.

Good Luck

i just started teaching my daughter to play chess. She loves her pieces and prefers to play on a board. There are some great books about it - so we can't help out with cd-roms or anything but I would definitely start with pawn games and learning to queen and adding pieces gradually. She adores playing and loves the control she has, instead of it being a game of chance. Great game. good luck!

I would learn with them - it is great fun.

Try www.chesskids.com or www.chesscorner.com - both good.

I meant to say - that the chess is still going really well. She now knows about rooks too. She is three - and games like snakes and ladders and candyland are gone becasue she has no control. It seems to be chess all the way !

There are heaps of sites about it - and I would recommend getting a traditional chess set to begin with - as the pieces look correct (especially if you are reading a chess book alongside).

I have a sanyo telecom phone and I've loaded Kasparov chess onto it. Best $5 I've spent with telecom. You can play the computer or "pass n play".

No lessons but different levels of difficulty and it makes playing chess on long car trips possible even if you are sitting in different parts of the car. Another good way to kill waiting time etc.

We found the basics were easy enough to learn - it's getting beyond them that is tricky.
