 Earliest age for testing?

Hiya,

Our boy is about to turn 2.5. He's been properly reading for six months, and likes to rhyme, make up new words, and play tricks on people... lots of fun! Language seems to be his thing.

In anycase he LOVES books but recently started pretending that he can't read anymore. We still do lots of reading with him, but have backed off from encouraging him to read the stories. I guess like a lot of people coming to this for the first time we're worried we might not be handling things right.

Is there any value in having a young child tested? Is it even possible? I'm thinking not, but wanted other opinions.

Our local Montessori has agreed to have him join their preschool class from 2.5 so that will help. I just found this site tonight, and am relieved.

Many many thanks!
Andy

Hi, Andy.

Most educational psychologists will test around 4 yrs old. It's a long time since my kids were the age of yours so I'm loathe to give advice on this age group now, but if you wanted to repost this on the Early Childhood section, there are plenty of Forum readers who are parenting gifted young ones who will be able to give you more current advice.

All the best
Sue
