Hi, We are contemplating a move to Napier and I am hoping that someone out there can recommend a great primary school (ideally catering well to gifted kids) for my 6 year old and soon to be 5 year old. Would really appreciate your suggestions as we don't know anyone who lives there and it is all rather daunting! Many thanks.
Our 5 year old started school in Napier in May, so we just had a little look around at a few schools. We decided to go for Taradale Primary, based on what we had heard. It's a pretty neat school, the students are quite respectful and there is quite a community feeling there BUT they don't seem to be too concerned about giftedness in the early years. They've got a copy of our Ed Psych assessment on file, but I do feel like he is going backwards. We spoke to the teacher to mention that he was bored, and instantly the teacher put up the defences and said that school is repetitive.
Unfortunately I don't know what the other schools are like first hand, but they all gave us the same spiel when we were looking. Nelson Park School, I have heard, is great. When we spoke to the Principal at Napier Central School, and asked if they catered to gifted children, he implied that he didn't believe in gifted children, that some are just better at school than others!! Bledisloe School sounded okay.
Good luck with your decision. Napier can be a nice place to live if you are into sports and the outdoors, but there isn't a lot of culture here - the little museum is closed and there aren't any great art galleries etc. The Aquarium is great, but you can tire of this quickly.
It turns out we won't be coming to Napier after all! My husband had a job opportunity there but we have decided against it for several reasons. But thanks heaps for your post and sorry that I won't get the chance to use your advice! We are also in a smallish town so I can relate to the lack of 'culture' - we have to make do with the library (which is excellent fortunately), the internet and occasional holidays to more exciting places!! Many thanks and all the best, Anna
I know you wrote your msg re Napier schools a while ago and you are now not coming to Napier, but I really wanted to let parents know about Bledisloe School in Taradale.
My 6 year old and 9 year old kids are there, as well as attending O.D.S. They have had a fantastic experience at Bledisloe. The school has been highly supportive of their attendance at O.D.S. and have also included both in extension programmes run from time to time.
The most impressive thing I have found is the openness of the teachers to talk with parents and keep us informed on how things are going (or not going!). My older child has some major anxiety issues around timed testing (yep she is classic visual-spatial) and my younger one has an extremely busy brain, just not on schoolwork! Staff have been interested in strategising to help them both. The smallish size (about 300 students) suits my two well and they are not lost in the system. If there are things that I question the teachers are really open to dialogue and that gains huge respect from me.
Jane, I could have written that exact post about Arthur Miller School. Same size and same openness, and catering well for my gifted 7 year old. It's a fab school. I'd be interested to talk to you sometime about ODS, we have a place there but haven't used it yet. My boy also has trouble with timed testing, and it's making it difficult for him in class at the moment.
ODS has been really successful for one child - like an oasis in her week and really suiting her creativity - but more of a disruption to routine for the other (the 6 year old) who struggles to keep focussed (on anything!!)at the best of times. His current classroom teacher (actually teachers as he goes to another teacher for reading and maths) continue to work out strategies to keep him on task and yey it seems to be working. I'd love to talk further. You can find me under Jane Stone in the phone book.
I have just come across these posts and even though they are from a year ago I would love some advice!
My son is coming up 6 and attends greenmeadows school. He is havin huge issues with his teacher due to his ability to stay focused and disrupting the class. Had someone today mention giftedness and after further investigation it makes perfect sense. He is testing highly on the surveys have taken online and is apparently very gifted?? Thisisall new to me. I would love some advice on what should do next....is school the first place i Should approach about this or should a see a dr? Are there good educational psychologists in Napier?
