 Delayed language

Hi there,

I have a 2yr 8 month old son. He is very mathematically & musically minded. He knows the route to get to his grandparents house some 4 km from our house. He has been confidently reading any number he sees for some time. He also loves to sing rather than talk. He walks around the house all day long singing songs to himself of which he can clearly say all the words in the verses.

However, his conversation is not quite at the level I would expect of a child this age or I do I have my expectations set too high? He's spoken in paragraphs from an early age but most of the paragraphs are gobbily gook with the odd coherent word thrown in. It's almost like he wants to be an adult conversing but doesn't know the words to go with it.

He does not have a hearing problem. I have had him tested.

I'm wondering if he is what we call visual-spatial and because this side of the brain is so developed that his language is not really a focus of his.

Am I expecting too much of a child?
Should I seek help?
Any advice?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Nicola,
my son also had delayed language in relation to rest of his abilities. He was the same with numbers and you just knew he was very bright but wasn't really speaking at all - especially not in conversations. It realy wasn't until about 3yrs 3 months that he got it all together and within 2 months he was reading, and now at 3yrs 10months his vocab is so broad, he NEVER stops talking, and you wouldn't know his language was late to come in!

I just think that both my son, and now yours, are busy developing other abilities but it will all come together in a hurry when he's ready. It's hard not to be concerned I know, especially if you spend time with friend's children who are verbally confident!

Appatently Einstein didn't talk until the age of 4 or 5 - don't worry too much, there is probably so much going on, I'm sure it will come. :)

My son sounded like he had his own language until 2.6 yrs, he would constantly talk but without 'real' language.
Once he got it all together he spoke clearly and with a huge vocab very quickly. He went from comments on his lack of language to how articulate he was almost overnight.....he is now 7 and never stops talking!

Your son is still very young and language will come, he seems to be busy mastering other skills at the moment!!

Thanks for your comments. They're all very reassuring. I'll just sit back and enjoy his other attributes for the time being and like you say, his language will come soon enough. Thanks for the reassurance :)
