 How early is too early?

I am a mum of 3 preschoolers and am about to start home schooling my eldest, who turns 5 at the end of the month.

I have noticed with both my (almost) 5 year old and his younger sister (2.5) that they seem to be exhibiting some traits that would lead me to be believe they may be gifted in some way or another.

How early is too early to tell whether this might be the case? How soon is too soon to be able to test for giftedness? Has anyone else been in this position?

It may sound like I'm being a 'pushy' mum or possibly overestimating their abilities, I would just really like to be able to give them the best start and encourage their abilities from the get go. If anyone has any advice to offer I would be grateful to hear it.

Many thanks
Lorinda

I don't have any personal experience with formal testing, but if you are going to home school I don't know how much use the formal testing would be in the real world sense of things because you wouldn't need to fight the powers that be in the education system to get your kids the extension required..?
I envy anyone who has the chance to homeschool, you can extend your kids without any limits, follow their interests and be as imaginative and out there as you like!

Thanks Shar.

I guess my reason for thinking that testing might be a good idea was simply because it would then help me to understand (as a home schooling mum) what sorts of things I might need to be aware of ie. types of curriculum to look at, how best to extend them in particular areas etc.

Thanks again.
