Lesley - as far as I am aware the nearest Gifted Association would be at Kapiti- but I will ask the president of the National Association to respond as she will have more information.
I'm over the hill in the Wairarapa, but hoping to be able share ideas and maybe organise a 'Gifted Kids' group for our area, maybe based in Palmerston North if we can get people interested.
Get in touch via the email if you are interested in this.
Hey Selena.
I think we have communicated before but you lived over Napier way then?
My pre-schooler is now a school girl and loving it.
We are incredibly lucky as our school has a roll of 7 children aged from 5 to 13 years. Yesterday my DD was eavesdropping on the Year 8s work instead of doing her own and came home with lots of questions about parallel lines.
I told the teacher she is more interested in their work than her own work which he was very interested in hearing.
They seem to start all children on reading level 1 which annoyed me a little but she was only on that level for 1 day so I mustn't be pushy, lol,
How are your children? What is Ohau like? I have driven through but must admit I didn't see anything much.
Lesley
Hi Maria,
I realise that I am responding to quite an old message but I'm wondering if anything ever got off the ground for gifted children in the Manawatu area? I live in Wanganui with one, possibly two gifted sons (aged 5 and 2 yrs.) and would be interested. My five year old is currently attending school and we wait to see how this works out.
I look forward to hearing from you, or indeed anyone in the area.
Thanks,
Paula
Hi Paula
I never heard back from Maria about this group.
We live in rural Manawatu and would be happy to get together somewhere between our two homes (Bulls perhaps). My daughter is 5 years old (6 in February) and is loving school.
We are planning on visiting the wind turbines during the holidays - perhaps you would like to join us? Drop me an email anyway, I am sure we can fit something in if you wanted.
Regards
Lesley Lomas

Hi everyone,
I have been thinking about starting a gifted group in Palmerston North. But not until about july 2005 as I am still doing academic study.
I will state right now that I'm happy to convene a group and support it, come up with ideas etc. BUT, however I'm not the president, secretary treasurer type person.
I would be most happy to hear from anyone wanting to be involved. Until recently I was involved with explorers in auckland and the NZAGC.
Robyn Wilson
I see an article in today's Tribune (24/7/2005) about Robyn Wilson holding a meeting to form a regional support group for Manawatu.
I haven't seen anything posted here so thought I would pass on what the paper said.
"The meeting will be held at 7.15pm on July 27, in the ground floor meeting room of the City Library."
I plan on being there
Hi everyone,
I have just figured out how to post on a listserve!
On wednesday night at the palmerston north public library, ground floor meeting room (27th) at 7.15pm I will be holding a meeting to establish a gifted childrens support group.
Hopefully there will be enough support in the region to make this group viable.
I have indications of support from Prof. Tracey Riley (massey uni) and Jill Bevan-Brown ( teachers college Massey) as future speakers. Also tonight I received a e-mail from Kelly Brown Snr advisor Maori Liasion & devo with the tertiary Ed. Commision who wishes to be involved in some way.
I have done several interviews with newspapers and contacted parents with children in ODS.
Sorry for such late notice of this meeting. Robyn Wilson.
p.s. cuppa tea and biscuits provided :)
Hi Robyn. There is a mum on the forum asking about support for her gifted 4 year old. Did your support group get off the ground. Please send me your email - can't see
There were plenty of people wanting a group in Palmerston North but no one wanted to help drive the thing. With a toddler and senoir positions in two other committees I am not in a position to do the driving. I am going to have one more fling at getting it off the ground and if there are no drivers the group will crash before leaving the ground....
So if you want a group whip up some drivers please!
Hi Heather
As I am relatively new to the gifted world I was wondering if you got this off the ground. I am not in a position to drive such a group myself but would love to meet parents of gifted children once in a while for a coffee and a chat. I'll wait and hear what others have come up with.
Hi Freedomnow
I don't believe the Palmerston North group ever got up and running. My daughter is now at One Day School and no one has mentioned it. I have a 7 year old daughter and would be more than happy to join you for a coffee and a chat sometime.
Email me if you like

We're are family living in Wanganui and I am very much interested in a coffee meet (of sorts) for Wanganui parents and their GK's. How would you feel about that?
Hi all, I see this is quite an old thread of messages from Palmerston North but am quite interested in joining ODS next year and/or getting together a group of like minded kids for a Palmerston North version of the Explorers type thing. I am a teacher (secondary) and quite happy to organise etc just wondering if there is still a demand in this area?
If you have comments either flick me an email, zoe_g@hotmail.com or reply here. Thanks :o)
