Hi all,
I'm trying to find out if the 'like minds' playgroup/coffee group in Christchurch is running tomorrow or not. I was intending to travel in to it. Is there anyone able to confirm it's running and the time???
Hi Linda
The ChCh Explorers which is the ChCh Branch of NZAGC who provide this forum have a coffee morning on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month during the school term. We meet at St Christophers Church Generations Cafe at 244 Avonhead Rd 10am to 11.30am. We will be there this Friday 13th Feb. There is a safe area for the children to play in.
I have never been to one. But I think it's about time I chatted to some other parents - is it okay if I come along? I was given a letter from the GATE co-ordiantor (if necessary). How big is the group? Do I need to be a formal member or can I come along and find out?
My elder daughter will be going to school soon - and it is getting tricky!
Hi Nikki, I too have not joined anything formal. My local kindy runs a G&T support group for parents of all ages. It has been wonderful to hear the experiences of people further down the path and across some of the bridges that face us.
Hi Barbara,
Thanks for the info. Children are at a very supportive kindy on Friday mornings and I am looking for a G&T group for son's socialisation out of kindy without the ongoing commitment/cost of Small Poppies.
Thanks anyway
We used to go to the Like Minds Preschool group and as the website (http://@!#$.org.nz/preschool.htm) says 'Your child does not have to be assessed as gifted to be able to attend this group nor do you have to be a member to attend.' and I suspect the NZAGC will be the same.
Out oldest son has just started school and if you have any questions I'd be more than happy to go over what we found and what questions we asked (or should have asked).
Have a look at the end of http://www.giftedchildren.org.nz/forum/read.php?f=7&i=3183&t=3156 for a quick overview of some of the schools we looked at.
I am coming over on Friday! My 4 year old will be at preschool - and actually my Mum wants to have over my two year old, so it will be just me - to see what is going on! I am so looking forward to it! See you there!
Hi Nikki, I am pleased that you enjoyed the coffee morning. It was lovely to meet you. Sorry Elise that I haven't seen your post in time to reply with the time.
To Clarify the discussion which is developing in this thread- ChCh Explorers is the ChCh Branch of the NZ assn Giffted Children. NZAGC membership subscriptions fund this resource (website and forum) which is why information for non affiliated groups is not viewed here.
The details of the ChCh Branch Coffee morning are
10am-11.30am on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month during school terms. We meet at St Christophers Generations Cafe @ 244 Avonhead Rd, Avonhead. There is a safe area for children to play in but the purpose is to provide a place for people with questions re gifted to meet and get support and answers from other parents with gifted children. People are welcome to attend whether they have children with them or not. You do not need to be a member to come along. Sometimes it is a grandparent with questions. This is a very informal time just to have a tea or coffee and chat and if your have children with you, allow them to meet and make some new friends.
Our clubdays which are one Sunday per month focus on providing for the children . To come to the clubdays you need to be a member of the ChCh Branch as there is a cost to the club to provide venues and facilitators. If people have any queries I am happy for you to call me on 357-9339
I understand why the 'other' organisation catering to G&T children can't advertise here but I don't know the history behind why there are two organisations. Without opening a pandora's box, is there somewhere I can learn how this came about and why the two are not merged (which seems logical to me -from outside both currently).
Nikki,
I went to ChCh Explorers on Sun and Barbara said the St Christopher's meeting was 2nd and 4th Friday's of month so I guess YES would be the answer.
Oh man, I didn't come lol. I dropped my son at preschool and then came home because my miss almost 4 was throwing a wobbly in the car because her sister climbed over and unlocked the door and it was her turn. Those girls are driving me insane at the moment.
hi Elise,
I met the lovely Nikki and her youngest. We've exchanged details and I intend to keep her informed of what I'm up to so that if linking up is possible we can. I.e. it would be a shame for the children to miss each other at the Museum etc because we've picked a different day to come to town.
Possible activity for us is

this Sunday.
That farmday looks great! My partner works Sundays but I might attempt it by myself with the kids. Are all the farms on the website doing it on Sunday? I think that the Rangiora one looks more suited to us, as my daughters were asking on our way home the other day about the sheep and what happens to the wool.
Glad you had a good morning at playgroup, I go weekly to an alternative playgroup not supported by this website ;)
Hi all,
Yes the farm day is Sunday at all the participating farms.
Should be great if weather holds. Just the sort of thing for G&T as they'll be able to ask all their unusual questions of the experts as opposed to the limits of a school 'farm study' environment.
I plan to go on Friday. Would love to meet up with a few people as it has been a few weeks! Barabara - would love to catch up - so will see you there hopefully.
