Indian Camp 2001

Auckland Explorers winter camp on 14-16 September had a Native American Indian theme. Despite the speakers being unable to attend due to events in the US, there was still plenty for the kids to do.
Many got together to create some magnificent teepees - made from bamboo sticks and old sheets, painted in true Indian style or with a more modern Kiwi theme. Some were decorated with beads, medicine shields or totems. Others were busy creating various Indian items including headgear, katchina dolls, shakers, dreamcatchers and bows & arrows, which were very popular with the boys! They got a chance to try out the real thing during an archery session run by students from the Macleans College Interact Club, who also helped to build an igloo out of boxes. Mark Freeman, an expat American and coach for Lacrosse NZ, taught us how to play Lacrosse. Some brave souls even went kayaking in the rain. On Saturday night, everyone gathered in the village (hall) for a pow-wow, where indians danced around the fire (candles) and Indian fables were read by squaws (Adriana and Gina). This was followed by popcorn and a movie. A few of the kids (and Stephen, who drew the short straw) spent the night in their teepees. Spare time was spent playing table tennis, board games, on the playground, and generally getting to know one another. Once again, a great camp organised by the Explorers committee. Special thanks to Christine, Roy and Macleans College students. |
