ADULT WEEKEND ESCAPE - WHATIPU LODGE - Parent/Teacher
Friday March 19th- Sunday 21st 2010
whatipulodge@xtra.co.nz Ph (09) 811 8860 (one hour from Auckland city in the Waitakere Ranges)
Whatipu, at the entrance of the Manukau Harbour, is best known for its remoteness and natural heritage values - its windswept sand dunes, wetlands and wildlife. This unique landscape, now part of the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, has long attracted visitors seeking a wilderness experience.
The lodge is a collection of historic buildings. The homestead was built by the Gibbons family in 1870 plus the two rows of little bedrooms, the kitchen and the dining room were built between 1910 and 1921.
Please note Whatipu Lodge runs on an alternative energy system and does not have mains power, so there are no washing machines or microwaves.
Activities in the area include: walking, from easy strolls to overnight tramps, exploring the caves, sand dunes, valleys and streams, wildlife bird sanctuary, fishing off rocks or surfcasting, relaxation, swimming in river holes and the sea in calm weather, tennis court, full size billiard table etc.
Lodge Accommodation: simple clean rooms: single, twin, double and a few multi occupancy, new (shared) bathrooms, self-catering in a well-equipped kitchen, alternative energy – Whatipu has no mains energy. Bring your own sheets, pillowcases, duvet or sleeping bag. Linen hire is available.
PLEASE NOTE: there is a “no dogs” policy at the lodge.
Programme:
The main thing will be for parents to be able to network, socialise and swap ideas on various issues to do with giftedness or whatever else takes their fancy. This can be done by enjoying the scenery, walks etc,
We are not able to book the lodge for Saturday night only, so have booked the lodge for the whole weekend. Therefore to cover costs we need to have most rooms used for both the nights. However we can offer limited places for people staying for Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun, with two couples sharing a room but only cohabiting on Saturday during the day. Hopefully not everyone will select the Sat/Sun option. There is also a provision for a few day visitors. Most rooms are double or twin but there are a few that have 3-4 beds and two single rooms.
Explorers will cover all food except for Saturday evening meal. Each person/couple will also need to bring a “pot luck” main & dessert for Saturday night dinner. There is limited fridge space so maybe bring it in a chilli bin if necessary.
Arrival would be any time from 2pm Friday. No combined meals are planned on Friday but the kitchen is available if people want to prepare something or grab takeaways at Titirangi.
Wrap up would be anytime from 2pm onwards on Sunday. You can stay as long as you wish to do activities in the area. No full cleaning up of the facility is required, just that it is left tidy.

Young Explorers Where the fun and learning adventures begin 10am to noon Thursday 25th March - Botanical Gardens in Manurewa –Bring a picnic to enjoy the hot summer weather!
Attention: Parents of children aged 6 and under!!!!
Young Explorers is the part of Explorers Club designed for gifted children aged 6 and under, and their families. It provides a comfortable environment for these special youngsters where they can make friends with others of their own age and ability. It also provides opportunities for the families to meet, share experiences and enjoy the support of other like- minded individuals.
Informal Get-togethers
Informal get-togethers for parents and children are held at least bi-monthly at either a park or indoor playground such as Chipmunks or Lollipops. These are considered ‘open’ and as such we welcome all parents of gifted children or those who are thought to be gifted. Although specifically for children aged under 6, homeschoolers with older children are always welcome to these get togethers! This is a great opportunity for parents who are seeking more information in the identification of giftedness, and those who know for sure they are dealing with a gifted child, to get together for support, friendship and for the children to play.

1.00 pm – 2.30pm Mind Lab
Since the dawn of civilization, board games have played an important part in human culture. Much knowledge has since been forgotten and our lifestyles have changed. Violent, action-packed computer games, intense video clips, and a plethora of television programmes have replaced the traditional activity of sitting together around the game board, an activity requiring deep thought, patience, perseverance, and social cooperation. The Mind Lab Group has reinstated the board game to its rightful and natural place and has transformed it once again into a powerful educational tool that appeals to children's hearts and heads alike. Thanks to a tested and proven methodology, The Mind Lab Group is engaged in one of the greatest educational challenges of our day.
3.00pm – 4.30pm Michael Piechowski
Michael Piechowski is a very special name in gifted education. Michael has dedicated his years in this field to understanding the emotional and spiritual world of the gifted young person. His insights have inspired so many others and aroused our awareness of the sensitivity and intensity of life for the gifted. He has introduced us to the work of Dabrowski, and made overexcitabilities an integral part of the language of gifted education. We are thrilled that he has agreed to come here to share his wisdom with us.

HALLOWEEN SLEEPOVER - Club Day Sat 5.00pm – Sun 8.30am (Parents collecting children please arrive early to help with cleanup!)
Orakei Sea Scout Den
Before new members think we are a bit confused. We have our Halloween evening in the right season rather than the right date. This means amongst other things that we can start letting off the fireworks a little earlier than we can in October when daylight saving has already started.
Come along and have some fun. Wearing a costume is optional and we will NOT be Trick or Treating.
Parents don’t have to stay unless their child is 6 or under. However some parents are required to stay the night. Members can elect to come along without sleeping over and go home after the fireworks.
We will need a “camp mother” and a “camp father”. We need volunteers!!! Let Christine know!
What to bring if sleeping over
• Something that looks gross, yucky or revolting for shared supper.
• Sleeping equipment: sleeping bag, camp mattress etc
• Torch
• Phone number for parents during night if they are not staying
• Such things as asthma inhalers if there is a possibility they maybe required.
Cost $7.50 per person with a maximum of $20 per family
Suitable for: All ages including YEX
