GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS: MEETING THEIR NEEDS IN NEW ZEALAND SCHOOLS - Congratulations must go to the Ministry of Education for their initiative in the publication of Gifted and Talented Students: Meeting Their Needs in New Zealand Schools (Ministry of Education, 2000a). The use of Moltzen, Riley, and McAlpine as authors shows the Ministry's recognition of valuable academic expertise available within New Zealand. However, there remains a group of people to whom acknowledgment remains at a minimal level: parents of gifted and talented students.... more

MENTORING IN NEW ZEALAND: AN OPTION TO CONSIDER FOR GIFTED STUDENTS - When thirteen year old Asher Lev's passion for drawing was obviously as abiding as it was astounding, the Rebbe sent him to Jacob Kahn. There followed ten years of a very fruitful mentorship. Jacob set challenging tasks for Asher. First, he was instructed to study and master Picasso's Guernica, where it hung in the art museum. CREATIVITY AS AN ELUSIVE FACTOR IN GIFTEDNESS - Creativity is an elusive factor in its relationship to giftedness. Many writers have alluded to the necessary but insufficient component of high intelligence to activate creativity and the reality that many high IQ people are not creative. So what is creativity and how do we foster it in children and young adults?...more

ISSUES IN THE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL ADJUSTMENT OF GIFTED CHILDREN: WHAT DOES THE LITERATURE SAY? - Traditionally, education of the gifted has focused on their cognitive abilities and has ignored their social and emotional needs. However, it is an area that is receiving increasing attention, with more research being undertaken in this field. During the last 20 years there has been a surge of research attempting to find out whether gifted students are better adjusted or are at more at risk for adjustment problems... more

MEASURING MORAL DEVELOPMENT: FEELING, THINKING, AND DOING - Is a morally developed person one who feels strongly about moral issues, or understands moral issues, or acts ethically when dealing with other people? In this paper, I answer that the third alternative is important. The meaning of the term moral is concerned with how people ought to treat each other. Studies in morality should deal with the actions of people as they function within groups... more

EQUITY WITH EXCELLENCE: CONFRONTING THE DILEMMAS AND CELEBRATING THE POSSIBILITIES - Equity. Excellence. Equity and excellence. Equity versus excellence. Equity with excellence. These terms - equity, excellence - are recurring themes in education. They appear in relation to culture, gender, socioeconomic status, disabilities. But what relation do they bear to special abilities?... more
